School of Urban Mission
Tony Johns 404.564.7747

The School of Urban Mission is a 2-year residential program oriented toward developing urban missionaries to serve as leaders in urban mission organizations and inner city mission churches. Each year 12 new students will be selected from applications received, with a total student body of 24 (12 first year, 12 second year). Application deadline for the School of Urban Mission is June 1. Applicants must have at least two years of post-high school experience (college, work or ministry). Students will live in the city and receive holistic training based upon a Head, Heart and Hands model. Upon successful completion of our program, students will be given the opportunity to be placed in full-time urban mission. In addition, students will also be able to complete their Bachelor of Arts in Urban Ministries or Christian Leadership at the City of Refuge through our partnership with Patten University (www.patten.edu). (For a more detailed description of the School of Urban Mission click here.)

Mission
Through the leading of the Holy Spirit, the City of Refuge School of Urban Mission seeks to train urban missionaries in the mission field by integrating academic formation (Head), spiritual transformation (Heart)
and practical implementation (Hands).

Vision
The School of Urban Mission seeks to train men and women - called by God to go to the urban mission field - in the mission field. Our primary model of mission is the life of Jesus Christ who was empowered and led by the Spirit to proclaim the gospel to the poor and downtrodden (Luke 4:18,19). This is accomplished through a relational and incarnational method of going to those in need, living with them, learning from them and loving them.

This method of learning involves the Head, the Heart and the Hands, providing mental, practical and spiritual formation of urban missionaries through a combination of classroom education (Head), hands on ministry experience (Hands) and discipleship within a community of faith (Heart).

Using this integrative method of training, the City of Refuge School of Urban Mission will seek to plant and develop urban mission centers in at-risk inner city neighborhoods. These mission centers will operate as an extension of the local church (The City of Refuge) and offer a daily presence of the church in the community. Through the mission centers, students will learn to first minister within a community of faith that seeks to evangelize the lost and disciple the converted. Second, they will reach out as a community of faith by serving the larger community through community organization and community development projects (i.e., landscaping, food pantry, providing meals and clothing, tutoring, mentoring, etc.). Third, the students will learn the importance of knowing the systems and structures of the larger city (mayor's office, city council, board of education, etc.) through involvement in issues that affect the residents of the city.
