Who says that benevolent care should always be a hand-out? City of Refuge, a leader in benevolent care to the homeless and impoverished of Atlantas inner-city, challenges this myth by creating a new social enterprise called City of Refuge Occupational Training Center.
This non-profit agency focuses on workforce development by integrating vocational training and life skills training within a revenue producing manufacturing environment. COROTC is located 2 miles west of the Georgia Dome in an area where industry has evaporated leaving behind a community in desperate need of revitalization.
Goals of COROTC:
Walk with trainees as they move from insufficiency and dependence on society to becoming independent and self-sufficient
Foster self-assurance and work ethic while challenging the individual to reach their highest potential in all aspects of life
Educate, equip and empower trainees to become leaders and teachers themselves as they advance to higher skill levels, pursue supervisory positions or are placed within mainstream careers in other companies
Produce competent, loyal and trained individuals who in turn become highly sought after employees
Be an economic stimulant to this impoverished community by employing approximately 70 technicians and 50 trainees within three to five years
Process of Empowerment:
Entry-level trainees develop vocational skills and work ethics in the light assembly plant focusing on mop production
Progressive skills are taught through the metal-working facility with emphasis on automated machinery, presses and manual machines for production of precision metal components
Life skill training and counseling addresses the core issues behind each trainees previous barriers to employment and equips them for future success in life
